Summer 1945 in Germany. In Nordstrand, a peninsula on the North Sea coast, the British army of occupation has set up its central administration in a carefully cordoned-off base cut off from the mainland. Gesa works in the military base's laundry with other German women. Her fiancé, a former Wehrmacht officer, is being held in the nearby internment camp, on the other side of the sea and the barbed wire. To find Gesa secretly at night in the dunes, Friedrich is not afraid to swim across the inlet. But the young woman falls in love with Simon, a British officer of German origin. She soon decides to tell Friedrich everything, but the dramatic events of that night prevent her from doing so...

Berlin photographer Julia Sandberg has fallen in love with the charming adventurer Percy van der Walt, who has an extremely unusual job. Percy is diving for diamonds off the coast of the South African port town of Port Sheldon. Julia wants to record this exciting work, in which he penetrates to the bottom of the sea every day at great risk, in a photo book for which she has already found a publisher. But no sooner has she followed the man of her life than Percy shows a completely different side of himself: he is uncharming, selfish and at times treats her like air. He also refuses to take Julia on his boat to take photos of the diamond divers' work.

After the death of her husband, the well-off widow Juliane Willbrand sinks into a great void. Her efforts to return to her old job as a librarian after twenty years prove futile until prison warden Schober gives her a chance. The challenge as head of the prison library gives Juliane energy and new courage to face life. She falls in love with the artistically talented prisoner Albert Tieck, who was sentenced to seven years behind bars after an arson in which his wife died. When Albert apparently uses a prison leave to escape, Juliane's world falls apart - until she discovers Albert's secret.
